Set off to Charleville. As always lots of roadkill. Also lots of emus, wild goats & other assorted fauna on road (just missed hitting an echidna).

Staying at Evening Star Tourist Park which is on a Station 8km out of town. Good set up. Happy hour around fire pit with damper.
Ulrika enjoyed walking Billy & took a lot of snaps.
We go into town & have lunch at Corones Hotel. Interesting place, built early 1920’s by an expat Greek. At the time it was the biggest & best in Australia. It had a ballroom that could seat 370. It is heritage listed & needs a lot of work. The current owners are trying to rebuild it bit cannot get flood insurance as it has been flooded regularly over the last 90 years. Leadlight windows, pressed metal ceilings, etc.
Weather is heating up, 29 today.
Left Charleville this morning heading for Ilfracombe (25km east of Longreach). Stopped in at Barcaldine to check out the Tree of Knowledge. Lots of pubs opposite & interesting history of the start of the Labour Party.
We are here at Ilfracombe for next 3 days. Lucky the Wellshot Hotel is only 50m from the Caravan Park.
We followed the rail line for most of the way from Roma without seeing a train on it, probably because there are only two services a week on it. Seems a waste with so many roadtrains on the road. Well we finally saw a train going past Ilfracombe Station this arvo.
